Description of the company
Fertiberia, SA, the head of the group, a leader in the Spanish fertilizer market, is the second company in terms of Spanish capital in the chemical sector and the expansion of Grupo Fertiberia has taken place been around it.
The great growth that Fertiberia has experienced in recent years has been mainly based on three pillars: internationalisation, diversification and research, development and innovation.
Fertiberia produces the most comprehensive range of solid and liquid, simple and complex fertilizers, meaning that it covers all the current needs of farmers, offering them fertilizers for extensive rainfed farming, traditional irrigated farming, and drip irrigation farming, whatever the climate and soil conditions in which it takes place.
The diversification policy favoured in recent years has led to a great growth in other industrial, non-agricultural sectors. Products whose origin is found in the manufacturing processes of fertilizers, as a supplier of raw materials to other large companies of different industries. Its activity in the ammonia and by-products industry is notable, in which the group is one of the main operators worldwide. Fertiberia is also the only primary manufacturer of AdBlue solution in Spain and one of the main ones in the European Union.
In 2004, thanks to its great experience in the chemical sector and the fertilizing sector, Fertiberia created a business line focusing on the needs of amateur gardeners, Fertiberia Garden, with a huge catalogue of products ranging from solid and liquid fertilizers to plant protection and products to deal with infestations.
Fertiberia has an annual production capacity of six million tonnes including intermediate and final products, representing approximately 75% of the Spanish sector. In recent years, it has adapted its productions in keeping with the development of the agricultural sector, the evolution of an increasingly globalised market and the new European socio-political reality, thereby maintaining a high level of competitiveness.
The five production units, which directly employ around 1,100 workers and which make up the company's industrial structure are in Huelva, Palos de la Frontera, Puertollano, Sagunto and Avilés. Equipped with the most sophisticated technologies, they produce a wide range of intermediate and final products, whether solid or liquid, simple or complex.
Fertiberia has two Regional Headquarters and eight Sales Delegations and supplies products through a network of distributors and cooperatives, thereby covering the entire Spanish territory.
In addition to products stored in the production centres, Fertiberia has five logistics centres in Pancorbo, (Burgos), Punta del Verde, (Seville), Villalar de los Comuneros (Valladolid), the New Port in Bilbao and Cabañas de Ebro (Zaragoza). This logistical infrastructure enables productive continuity to be maintained and guarantees fast supplies.
Since its incorporation into the Grupo Villar Mir, the necessary investment has been made in all the company areas, ensuring that Fertiberia is an economically healthy, competitive company that is scrupulously respectful towards the environment and guarantees the future of the powerful Spanish fertilizer sector.

Product and sale of strontium by-products

Description of the company
100% owned by Grupo Fertiberia, Química del Estroncio is a high-technology company in the Valle de Escombreras (Cartagena), whose main activity is the production of strontium salts, a raw material mainly used in the manufacturing of glass for LCD-TFi screens, used in televisions, computers, PDAs, iPads and mobile phones. It is also used in pyrotechnics and markers for flares and other devices for civil and military use, as well as in the production of pigments and paints and other by-product of the chemical and pharmaceutical industry. Another of its uses is in the manufacturing of airbags for the automobile industry.
The greatest demand for strontium salts is found in countries that manufacture LCD-TFT screens, such as Japan, Korea, Taiwan, Singapore and the United States.
In 2000, Química del Estroncio SA set up its factory, culminating a significant industrial project, developed with its own technology, to obtain strontium carbonate from the mineral celestine, strontium sulphate.
This is a pioneering process in the world, as it facilitates obtaining strontium nitrate without the need to previously have strontium carbonate, giving it a great competitive advantage. During the manufacturing process of the strontium salts, ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate are also produced, which are commercialised as fertilizers.
For this, the company uses an innovative manufacturing process, different from the Black Ash process used to date which, in one of its intermediate stages, originates the raw material for the production of strontium nitrate crystal. This process also produces two solutions of ammonium sulphate and ammonium nitrate, used as fertilizers.
Química del Estroncio’s facilities are in a strategic place, the Valle de Escombreras, in Cartagena (Murcia, Spain), an industrial zone very close to the city's commercial port, facilitating the shipment of different products by sea to the main consumption centres (Japan, India, Southeast Asia, the USA, South Africa, England, etc.). Spanish and European consumers are supplied by means of an established network of roads.
